Wondering what to wear to a boudoir session? Girl, you are in the right place! I'm Kati Lynn, a boudoir photographer in Loganville, GA, and if you have been thinking about booking a session but have absolutely no idea what to wear, how to prepare, or what to expect, this guide has you covered.

But let me just start off by saying: you do not need to lose weight, get a tan, buy an entirely new wardrobe, or magically become more confident before your session. Boudoir is about celebrating you, exactly as you are right now. Your body does not have to look a certain way to deserve beautiful photos, and you do not have to know how to pose like a Victoria's Secret model to look incredible in front of the camera.

Whether you are planning a session to give photos to your partner, celebrating a milestone, documenting a new chapter of your life, or simply doing something for yourself, I want you to walk into your session feeling prepared, excited, and ready to own every second of it.

So, let's get into all things boudoir, from choosing outfits that flatter your body to the little things you can do beforehand to make your experience that much better.

1. Boudoir Outfit Ideas: What to Wear to Your Session

Let's talk about boudoir outfits, because this is usually one of the first things people stress about. And honestly? You have SO many options that I totally understand why it can feel overwhelming.

When choosing lingerie for your session, the biggest thing I want you to remember is that you should feel good in what you are wearing. I can photograph you in the most beautiful lingerie set in the world, but if you spend the entire session tugging at it, adjusting the straps, or worrying about how you look, you are not going to feel your best.

The goal is to find pieces that make you feel confident, comfortable, and like the main character, all at the same time.

Here are some of my favorite boudoir lingerie ideas to consider.

Matching Lingerie Sets for Boudoir

You can never go wrong with a matching bra and undie set. They photograph beautifully, create a cohesive look, and come in so many different styles that there is genuinely something for everyone.

Think delicate lace, classic black, romantic blush, bold red, or even a fun pop of color. You can go soft and feminine, dark and moody, or full on bombshell depending on your personal style.

If you are totally new to boudoir, I would stick to colors you know you feel most comfortable in. For most people, that's usually black. Honestly, you can never go wrong with black. It's sexy and classic.

Bodysuits and Teddies

If you want something that feels a little more secure while still giving you that gorgeous lingerie look, a bodysuit is an amazing option.

Bodysuits can create beautiful lines, highlight your waist, and offer more coverage through the midsection without sacrificing that sexy feel. They are also a great choice if you are not used to wearing lingerie and want something that feels a little less intimidating.

Corsets and Bustiers

Want that dramatic, snatched waist moment? A corset or bustier might be your girl.

These styles can add structure, emphasize your waist, and create a gorgeous hourglass effect. They are especially fun for vintage inspired looks, dramatic editorial photos, or anyone who loves a little extra detail.

I think these are usually the kind of lingerie we picture when we think about boudoir. They are timeless and add so much to any body type.

Just make sure you can breathe comfortably and move without feeling restricted. We want gorgeous photos, not a situation where you are counting down the seconds until you can take your outfit off!

Oversized Sweaters and Button-Downs

Not every boudoir outfit has to be lingerie. In fact, some of the most beautiful images come from the simplest pieces.

An oversized sweater, a loose button-down, your favorite T-shirt, or a cozy robe can create a softer, more intimate look. These pieces are perfect if you want something a little more relaxed or prefer to ease into your session before bringing out the lingerie.

Bonus points if any of these pieces of clothing belong to your partner!

Sheets, Implied Nudity, and Nude Looks

If you are comfortable with it, sheets and implied nude poses can create some of the most timeless boudoir images.

And before you panic, implied nudity does not mean you have to show anything you do not want to show. It is all about posing, angles, light, and strategic placement.

Your comfort level sets the boundaries. Always.

I especially love these kinds of photos for anonymous shots, which are perfect if you want to show off parts of your session without showing your face. Imagine a silk sheet draped over your thigh, your leg propped up high, and your calf muscles are POPPIN. Sheets can add so much detail and offer a luxurious feel to your photos.

All in all, if worst comes to worst and you can't decide on an outfit, come anyway. We will figure it out!

2. Best Boudoir Lingerie for Your Body Type

Okay, let's get one thing straight before we dive into this section. There is no universal rulebook that says certain bodies can wear certain lingerie styles.

You do not have to be a specific size to wear a teddy. You do not have to have a flat stomach to wear a two piece set. And you absolutely do not need an hourglass figure to rock a corset.

These suggestions are simply starting points to help you find pieces that highlight the features YOU love most. Think of them as inspiration, not rules.

Lingerie for a Fuller Bust

If you have a larger bust, support can make a huge difference in how comfortable you feel during your session.

Look for bras with underwire, wider straps, supportive bands, or adjustable features. These details can provide lift and help everything feel secure while you move through different poses.

Balconette and plunge styles can create beautiful necklines, while structured bodysuits can offer support throughout the torso.

And please do not assume that you need to cover up your chest just because you have a fuller bust. If you love a plunging neckline, wear the plunging neckline! The right fit is what matters. We are looking for pieces that you don't second guess when you put them on, pieces that make you feel pretty and sexy right off the bat.

Lingerie for a Smaller Bust

Smaller busts look incredible in so many lingerie styles, especially delicate lace bralettes, triangle tops, and strappy designs.

If you love a little extra shape or dimension, padded cups, ruffles, and gathered fabric can create that effect. If you prefer a more natural look, unlined lace and soft bralettes are beautiful choices.

You can also have so much fun with open cup details, intricate straps, and backless designs because they do not always require the same level of bust support.

The takeaway? You do not need to create curves that you do not have. Your natural shape is beautiful, and there are so many ways to style and decorate it.

Lingerie for a Curvy Midsection

Your stomach is not something you need to hide. Bodies have folds, curves, softness, and texture. That is normal, and it is beautiful.

That said, if you love a little more coverage through your midsection, high waisted panties, lace bodysuits, and corset inspired pieces can be gorgeous options.

You might also love a bodysuit with sheer panels or lace details that create visual interest without making you feel overly exposed.

If you prefer a two piece set, go for it! High waisted bottoms are not a requirement, and neither is covering your stomach. You are allowed to rock what you want, even if that goes against what is trendy for "your body type."

The most flattering outfit is one that lets you relax and feel comfortable in your own skin.

Lingerie for Wider Hips or Fuller Thighs

If you love highlighting your hips, look for high cut undies, cheeky bottoms, or string styles that create a beautiful line through your legs.

High cut designs can visually lengthen the legs, while side straps can draw attention to your waist and hips.

If you prefer more coverage, a lace boyshort style or high waisted bottoms can be equally beautiful. You can also play with bodysuits that emphasize the waist and flow naturally over the hips.

There is no need to squeeze yourself into something that does not feel like you. The goal is to celebrate your shape, not fight against it.

Lingerie for a Straighter or Athletic Figure

With a straighter silhouette, lingerie with ruching, cutouts, lace details, or contrasting panels can add visual dimension.

Corsets, garter belts, and strappy sets can create definition around the waist and hips, while soft fabrics and delicate lace can add a romantic feel.

Want a more editorial look? Try a structured bodysuit or a dramatic black lingerie set.

Want something playful? A colorful bralette with matching bottoms can be just the thing.

And remember, you do not need to create curves to be sexy. Strong shoulders, long lines, and athletic shapes photograph beautifully all on their own. Your body shows power and beauty in its uniqueness, so embrace it!

Lingerie for Petite Frames or a Shorter Torso

If you are petite, high cut lingerie can help create the appearance of longer legs, while low profile details and delicate straps can keep a look from feeling visually overwhelming.

If you have a shorter torso, pay attention to where bodysuits and corsets sit on your waist. Some designs may feel more comfortable and balanced than others depending on your proportions.

Most importantly, check the fit. A bodysuit that is too short can pull uncomfortably, while one that fits your torso properly will let you move naturally.

Plus Size Boudoir Lingerie

Let me say this loudly for the people in the back: plus size women belong in boudoir, and you do not need to wait until your body changes to experience it.

There are so many stunning lingerie options designed with curves in mind, from supportive bras and high waisted sets to sheer bodysuits, corsets, and dramatic lace pieces.

Look for pieces that fit your current measurements rather than choosing a smaller size because you hope it will feel more flattering. Fabric digging into your skin or straps constantly slipping will only distract you from enjoying the experience, and will create divots and lines in your skin.

LOVE your curves. Choose something that shows them off. If you prefer more coverage, it's okay to embrace that too.

You get to decide what makes you feel beautiful.

3. Best Colors for Boudoir Photos

Once you have an idea of the styles you love, it is time to think about color.

Black is a classic for a reason. It creates a timeless, dramatic look and works beautifully for both moody and editorial style images.

White and ivory are perfect for a softer, romantic aesthetic. Think dreamy window light, cozy sheets, and delicate lace.

Red is bold, confident, and full of attitude. If you want something that feels powerful and unapologetically sexy, this is your sign.

Blush, champagne, and soft pinks can create a feminine, delicate look, while jewel tones like emerald, burgundy, and sapphire bring richness and depth to your images.

Neutrals are another beautiful option, especially if you want a minimal, natural feel.

One thing I recommend is thinking about the overall mood you want for your session. Are you going for something romantic and soft? Dark and dramatic? Playful and flirty? Your outfit colors can help bring that vision to life.

And if you have a favorite color that makes you feel incredible, wear it! You do not have to follow a color rule just because someone on the internet says it is the most flattering. While neon colors are usually something to avoid for sessions, I have seen these colors bring joy and a very burlesque feel to a session.

4. How Many Outfits to Bring to a Boudoir Session

My recommendation is to have a few different options rather than bringing your entire lingerie drawer.

Three to five outfits is a great starting point for many sessions, although the ideal number depends on your session length and your photographer's plan.

Try choosing outfits that give you different looks rather than five versions of the same thing. Once you get here, I can help you decide what suits you best.

For example:

  • A classic black lingerie set

  • A soft bodysuit or teddy

  • An oversized button-down or sweater

  • A bold color or statement piece

  • A robe, sheet look, or another option that feels personal to you

You do not have to use every outfit you bring. Sometimes one set photographs so beautifully that we spend more time with it, and that is completely fine.

If you are unsure about what to choose, remember, I have many choices collected in my client wardrobe at my Loganville studio. So many fun styles and sizes ranging from XS to 5X!

5. What If You Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera?

Girl, this is probably the number one concern I hear, and I want you to know that it is completely normal.

Most of my Loganville and Atlanta area clients are not walking into a boudoir studio with years of modeling experience. You might feel awkward, nervous, giggly, or unsure about where to put your hands. You might not know how to arch your back or what to do with your face.

That is okay. Seriously.

You are not expected to know how to pose. That is my job.

I will guide you through positioning your body, adjusting your hands, directing your facial expressions, and finding angles that work beautifully for you. You do not have to figure everything out on your own.

If you feel nervous, tell me. If you need a break, take one. If a pose feels uncomfortable, speak up.

You can laugh. You can ask questions. You can take a breath and reset.

Some of the best moments happen when you stop worrying about looking perfect and allow yourself to enjoy the experience.

And remember, the confident woman in those inspiration photos was not necessarily born knowing how to pose either. She may simply have had someone guiding her and giving her permission to relax.

6. Bring Something Personal to Your Boudoir Session

One of my favorite ways to make a boudoir session feel special is to incorporate something personal.

Maybe it is your partner's favorite button-down, a sentimental piece of jewelry, your wedding veil, a leather jacket, or a pair of heels you absolutely love.

Maybe it is a perfume you wear every day, a robe that makes you feel luxurious, or an outfit that represents a new chapter in your life.

Your session does not have to follow a particular formula. It can be romantic, playful, edgy, soft, glamorous, or a little bit of everything.

If there is something that makes you feel powerful or reminds you of who you are, bring it along.

These little details can make your gallery feel more meaningful and give your photos a story beyond simply looking beautiful.

7. How to Prepare for Your Boudoir Session

Outfits are a big piece of the puzzle, but a few small things in the days leading up to your session can make the whole experience feel easier and more fun.

  • Skip tight clothing the day of. Snug waistbands, bras, and socks can leave marks on your skin that show up in photos. Wear loose, comfy clothes to your session.

  • Hydrate and rest. Drink plenty of water in the days before and try to get a good night's sleep. You will feel better, and it shows.

  • Take care of your skin. Moisturize, and avoid trying a brand new skincare product or treatment right before your session.

  • Plan your hair and makeup. Decide whether you want professional hair and makeup or a look you can do yourself. Either way, go a little bolder than you would for everyday, because cameras soften makeup.

  • Pack the extras. Bring heels, jewelry, a robe, and anything personal you want included. If you wear a bra or underwear to the studio, bring something to change into afterward.

  • Communicate with me. Tell me about your vibe, your must-haves, and any areas you would rather we skip. The more I know, the better your session will be.

The most important part of preparing is giving yourself permission to enjoy this. You do not need to fix anything about yourself first.

8. Remember Why You Booked Your Boudoir Session

Before we wrap this up, I want you to remember something.

You do not need a special occasion to book a boudoir session.

You do not need to be getting married, celebrating a birthday, losing weight, or reaching a particular milestone. You do not need permission from anyone else to do something that makes you feel good about yourself.

Maybe you are celebrating a season of growth. Maybe you are stepping into a new chapter. Maybe you want to surprise your partner. Maybe you have spent years putting everyone else first and finally want to do something just for you.

Whatever your reason, it is enough.

Boudoir can be an opportunity to see yourself from a different perspective, try something outside your comfort zone, and create images that remind you how incredible you are.

And no, you do not have to feel confident every single second of the experience. Sometimes confidence comes afterward, when you see your images and realize that the things you worried about were never the whole story.

You are allowed to take up space. You are allowed to feel beautiful. You are allowed to celebrate your body without waiting for it to look different.

9. Boudoir Session FAQs

Do I need to be in shape for a boudoir session?

Not at all. Boudoir is for every body, and you do not need to lose weight, tone up, or change anything before your session. My job is to pose and light you in ways that make you feel amazing exactly as you are.

What should I wear if I'm nervous about my first boudoir session?

Start with something you already feel comfortable in. For many people that is a black lingerie set or a bodysuit, with a cozy sweater or button-down as a backup. Once you arrive, we can adjust and try new looks as you relax.

How many outfits should I bring to a boudoir session?

Three to five outfits is a great starting point. Choose different looks, like a classic set, a bodysuit or teddy, an oversized shirt, and one statement piece, and we will decide together what works best.

Can I have a boudoir session if I'm plus size?

Absolutely. Plus size women belong in boudoir, and my client wardrobe includes sizes from XS to 5X, so you can try on flattering options at your session.

Do you provide lingerie for boudoir sessions in Loganville, GA?

Yes! I have a client wardrobe at my Loganville studio with a variety of styles and sizes. You are also welcome to bring your own pieces.

Final Thoughts: Your Boudoir Era Starts Here

If there is one thing I hope you take away from this guide, it is that preparing for a boudoir session should feel exciting, not like another list of things you need to fix about yourself.

Choose outfits that make you feel amazing. Find lingerie that fits your body comfortably. Take care of yourself in the days leading up to your session, communicate with your photographer, and give yourself permission to enjoy the experience.

You do not have to look like anyone else. You do not have to know how to pose. And you absolutely do not have to wait until you feel completely confident to show up.

You just have to show up as YOU.

The magic of boudoir is not about becoming someone different. It is about celebrating the woman you already are.

So grab that lingerie set you have been saving, put on the outfit that makes you feel like THAT girl, and get ready to see yourself in a whole new light.
